Mental Vs Physical

I think we can all agree that there is a certain degree of physicality when it comes to sports. Some sports, like football, require an extreme amount of physicality, where as a sport , like golf, requires less of the individual. Regardless being physically fit is a must when doing any sport. It is equally important as being mentally fit for the sport as well. Too often we find ourselves training physically for cheer. We make sure we can, dance, lift up other human beings, jump flip , roll you name it. It requires a high level of endurance and physicality, so who wouldn't train to get stronger , faster, lighter, and to jump higher. However with the importance that is put on being physically tough, we often put our mental training on the back burner. If you think about it, most , if not all, physical training requires some sort of mentality to get through. For instance, when running laps our body gives tel tell signs of getting tired. Aching on our side, our breath starts shorten

Evaluations

Cheer evaluations are around the corner, are you ready to bring in the new cheer year? As we all finish up our National Events, and end of the year competitions, it is important to note the stress of the everyday cheer leader. They go to practice three some times five days a week to perfect, and learn new tumbling tricks, stunts and routines. They are only doing this for one reason, to Level up! That's right, who wants to be stuck in the same old level, doing the same old tricks again for another year. The constant struggle with improving your level, while you are competing at a whole different level does get stressful and tiresome. Luckily there are a few ways to over come this. The most obvious being private time. It is worth the money, and the time to schedule privates with a coach you feel will push you to be your best. This could range anywhere from 30 min to an hour a week. This extra time affords you the opportunity to work on things at your pace, with focus on one t

Banana Tumbling

When learning new tricks it is always important to remember the technique. Nothing about the technique is arbitrary, instead it is meant to help you progress in your tumbling easier. One thing that sometimes gets overlooked is the banana. Now you might be asking what does fruit have to do with it/ Well aside from eating a healthier diet, we are referring to the shape of the banana. Alot of us have see n this, and probably have done this before. We go into the handstand with a curved back, obviously shaped like the banana. It is cool because we are learning how to hold the handstand and we begin to immediately feel ourselves balancing on our  hands. The problem with this position is that it is only good for just that.  If you were to try to progress in your tumbling ability, this will actually hinder you from learning properly, and could lead to some awkward looking tumbling. This is because there is less activation of the body's muscle for your lower back and your core.

There are times an athlete struggles with progressing in their tumbling, there are numerous factors that come into play into helping the athlete achieve their goal in tumbling. One of these factors, as I have noticed, is how well the athlete can perform the handstand.  When doing the handstand the athlete is not only just holding them selves with their hands, they are engaging in complex movements that the whole body to work together. The athlete is developing strength as well as communicating with all the muscle in their body to help control the handstand. We get lots of athletes that come in and are having trouble progressing or even landing their trick, and one thing we have found in common is that they were not training their handstand. If you were to break down the anatomy of most tumbling tricks, even the most basic ones, you begin to see why the handstand is vital to achieving success in tumbling.  We will use the cart wheel for example. There is a point in which the a
