Evaluations

Cheer evaluations are around the corner, are you ready to bring in the new cheer year? As we all finish up our National Events, and end of the year competitions, it is important to note the stress of the everyday cheer leader. They go to practice three some times five days a week to perfect, and learn new tumbling tricks, stunts and routines. They are only doing this for one reason, to Level up!

That's right, who wants to be stuck in the same old level, doing the same old tricks again for another year. The constant struggle with improving your level, while you are competing at a whole different level does get stressful and tiresome. Luckily there are a few ways to over come this.

The most obvious being private time. It is worth the money, and the time to schedule privates with a coach you feel will push you to be your best. This could range anywhere from 30 min to an hour a week. This extra time affords you the opportunity to work on things at your pace, with focus on one thing, you! Sometimes it is difficult to try to improve on your own, a well informed and knowledgeable coach will make sure to get you where you need to be. However this is not always a solution for most families. Taking an extra class will be beneficial as well.

Whether it be a stunting, tumbling, or flight class; most gyms offer various classes to help improve the athletes skills and ability. Taking a tumbling class may be a more reasonable approach for most all star families as privates tend to be pricey and limited. Where as a private there is sole focus on the individual, a class is focused on everybody, not that it is a bad thing as we can learn and draw ideas from our peers., however it tends to be a more streamlined class to get the most athletes engaged during a certain time frame. This does lead to limited spotted skills, as well as limited use of the floor because the whole team is sharing it. It is important to note that when you sign up for a class, make sure your skill level matches the class requirements. This way you can get the best learning opportunities and focus on the skills that matter.
Pro Tip: Ask your front desk rep how many students are in a class before signing up. This way you can be put in the one with lowest amount of students for a more focused practice

Last, but certainly not least, are tryout prep classes. At Pacific Beach All-Stars, we offer a tryout class to focus on the individual needs of the athletes to make it through the tryouts. This is a great time for athletes to participate and learn exactly what is needed to get to the level they want. Most gyms offer this type of program to give athletes the opportunity to improve themselves with their peers, for the sole purpose of leveling up.

Tryouts are stressful times for cheer athletes. It is best to recognize the ideal level to be placed in, and train accordingly as to avoid placement disappointment, and athlete burnout. Remember to always ask for your coach's opinion in terms of what level to tryout. They are very knowledgeable and would place you in the most appropriate level.
